Harvey doesn't feel so tough

Harvey sat on the edge of the bed and opened his phone. The three of them had searched for almost an hour to find a hotel close to their venue that didn’t have a no vacancy light on. The only downside was that it was one room with a king sized bed. Harvey opted to let his friends sleep on the bed since he already knew they were a thing. He didn’t have a problem sleeping on the floor with extra blankets.

After getting ready for bed, he had got into the habit of going through their emails to look into inquiries. He took the responsibility of essentially being their manager as of late.

Harvey scrolled through a slew of different emails asking them to be the opening band for different shows. He smiled to himself, he never thought they would be getting this far. He turned to show Cornelius and Static all the messages, only to see they were completely passed out. Seeing them so peaceful made him happy. For too long they had all been split. It was crazy to think they were all back together again.

He continued to look through the messages, only to feel his stomach sink when he came across one from his bank.

It was another reminder about his loan payment he owed from college. He just graduated not a few months prior and was finally enjoying the freedom. The gigs they did were paying ok enough, but not really enough for the debt he had collected. His brother tried his hardest to force his method of getting scholarships onto him but it didn’t work for him. Harvey’s own stubbornness was his downfall, and he knew it.

He at least knew to go into a profession that paid well and that he had a knack for. After Cornelius left he just turned playing the bass into a hobby. He didn’t know he would be in this spot again, wishing to be free of the responsibility of now trying to find an office level job.

Closing out the emails, he decided to bite the bullet and search for jobs again. All were pretty decent pay, he had all the requirements, the only thing was the hours. All the usual 9-5 corporate usual. He tried to convince himself that he had the strength to work during the day and do shows at night. In his heart he knew his plan wouldn’t work. Their band had become an around the clock job. He knew the longer he waited to apply to places, the worse it looked on his resume.

He huffed and closed out of the job searching for the night. It was too overwhelming. He wanted to pretend none of that existed for a while longer.

Harvey flopped over and laid on the edge of the bed. He faced his sleeping friends. Looking at them now, they had changed so much and not at all at the same time. Static who grew from a shy nerd, now more confident and stronger. Cornelius who was able to finally become who he wanted his whole life. Harvey was jealous. Sometimes he still felt like the loser band kid nerd. Hell, he couldn’t even keep a girlfriend. He craved to live like them. Almost carefree, letting each day decide where it takes you. Not worrying about the future and what “looks good on a resume”. Just caring about making music and expressing themselves with it. That’s all he ever wanted.

To lighten his mood, he decided to scroll through their social media. Reading all the fun comments about their posts always made him smile. He couldn’t help himself scrolling back on their older posts. Each photo had a story. Whether it was them goofing off in a supermarket, showing off their performance, or even just a selfie. Times where I was just living in the moment with them. Not worrying about what will happen the next day.

The exhaustion finally started to hit him as he laid in the bed on his phone. He didn’t feel like getting up and sleeping on the floor. Harvey scooted in the bed a little closer from the edge and rested his head on Cornelius’ outstretched arm. He loved being close to his best friends. Their energy was something he craved. At the end of the day they always inspired him to be who he really was in his heart.
